João's portfolio includes projects for institutional, corporate, and private clients in historic cities and natural landscapes across four continents. At ZHA, he has contributed to projects in the Middle East, including the Trojena Tower and Lookout in Saudi Arabia.
Before joining ZHA, João worked at OMA in Rotterdam, contributing to the CCTV Headquarters and Cultural Centre in Beijing, as well as urban projects, exhibition designs, and research. At Foster + Partners, he was involved in masterplanning and designing the Apple Campus in California. His experience also includes working with Grimshaw on the Nine Elms mixed-use regeneration area in London.


Featured Project
Located on Al Marjan Island in Ras Al Khaimah, UAE, Oystra is a 128,000 square metre seafront development of 950 one- to four-bedroom apartments, duplexes, penthouses, and waterfront villas, together with extensive shopping, dining and leisure amenities.
João completed his Diploma in Architecture from the University of Lisbon in Portugal and his Master of Architecture and Urbanism from the Design Research Laboratory (DRL) at the Architectural Association (AA) in London.
João has taught and lectured at the AA, London South Bank University, and Syracuse University’s London programme. From 2009 to 2012, he led a Diploma Unit at the AA and established the AA Visiting School in Lisbon. His written contributions on arts and culture have been featured in Electra Magazine, Architectural Digest, AA Press, and Conditions Magazine.
Originating from a culturally diverse background, João has resided in three countries and gained fluency in five languages. He brings an open-minded perspective and relentless curiosity to all his creative and professional pursuits. Beyond architecture, he enjoys kite surfing, writing, and drawing.
