Paolo brings extensive experience working with clients globally. Joining ZHA in 2002, he began his journey with MAXXI, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome. He directed the façade team for Morpheus Hotel in Macau, the world’s first free-form structural exoskeleton high-rise building, and is currently co-directing the Seamless City masterplan in Hangzhou, China.
Leading large teams of up to 100 architects, he ensures collaboration between internal and external teams, delivering innovative and practical designs. He introduced a sustainable smart urban planning framework at ZHA, implementing strategies to reduce urban environmental footprints through design, planning, and the use of sustainable resources.
Prior to joining ZHA, Paolo worked as a consultant for the Italian Red Cross, designing for natural-disaster-affected areas in Central America and Turkey with a focus on integrating environmental, social, and economic values. He also worked on the Syracuse Old City Regeneration Project in the historic town of Sicily, Italy, which involved masterplanning, typological and historical construction sequence analysis, earthquake strategy development, and architectural design.

Featured Projects
From a hotel that combines dramatic public spaces and generous guest rooms with innovative engineering and formal cohesion, to a museum sharing a public dimension with the local community, discover highlights of Paolo's notable projects at ZHA.

Paolo received his Master of Architecture at the University of Rome La Sapienza, graduating with honours in 1994. He earned his Doctoral Degree in Urban Sustainable Development from the Third University of Rome in Italy in 2004. His PhD focused on designing for natural disaster-prone areas, exploring the multidimensional aspects of sustainability.
Paolo was Associate Professor at the Third University of Rome, teaching architectural design, theory, and building systems. He continues to teach in Italy, generously sharing his knowledge on architectural technology and cultural buildings with people.
Outside the office, Paolo enjoys experiencing the natural world at different paces through travelling and cycling, and spending quality time with his family and friends.

Hospitality
The world’s first free-form high-rise exoskeleton optimises the interiors by creating spaces that are uninterrupted by supporting walls or columns. Three horizontal vortices generate the voids through the building and define the hotel’s dramatic internal public spaces.

Culture
MAXXI supercedes the notion of the museum as ‘object’ or – presenting a field of buildings accessible to all, with no firm boundary between what is ‘within’ and what is ‘without’. Central to this new reality are confluent lines – walls intersecting and separating to create interior and exterior spaces.
