About José

José Pareja Gómez joined ZHA in 2013 and has since played a key role in the development of the ZHA Virtual Reality Group (ZHVR), a research group that integrates emerging VR and AR technologies into architectural and design applications.

Profile

José has played a key role in a wide range of urban and architectural projects, focusing on applying computation to the design development process. Specialises in using advanced computational tools and parametric logic to streamline workflows, his expertise spans various typologies, including hospitality, residential, office, transport, and masterplanning.

As a key member of the ZHVR group, José contributes to developing immersive VR experiences and presentations tailored for architectural projects and helps create immersive modelling tools, enabling designers to collaborate and design within augmented reality. He also collaborates on cutting-edge Metaverse projects, exploring new frontiers in digital design.

Prior to joining ZHA, José designed and built a monument for the Bicentennial celebration of the Mexican Independence in 2010, located in Leon, Mexico.

Education & Professional Philosophy

José received his Bachelor in Architecture from the De La Salle University in Mexico and his Master of Architecture and Urbanism from the Design Research Laboratory (DRL) at the Architectural Association (AA) in London.

e is currently teaching at the AA DRL programme, and has previously taught at the Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL)’s BPro programme, where his focus was on extended realities and augmentation in architectural design and fabrication. He has lectured on diverse technological visualisation and architectural forms across Latin America and Europe.

José specialises in the use of computation within the design development and rationalisation process. He began with an interest in design, visualisation, technology and computational tools, which he integrates into his work as a designer and into his activities as a VR and Metaverse researcher and developer. Outside of work, he channels his creativity into music, playing in a rock band
