A ZHA designed rug using iterative digital design process, combined precision of contemporary technologies and remarkable tactile qualities of Ghazni Wool.

Handcrafted in northern Afghanistan using 100% Ghazni wool

ISHKAR is a social enterprise working with skilled artisans in countries affected by conflict. ZHA has joined leading designers to create a collection of rugs exploring the theme of ‘togetherness’ for ISHKAR’s 10th anniversary.

Founded in Kabul in 2016, ISHKAR works with artisans in communities facing real and perceived barriers to international trade. Celebrating the finest materials and craftsmanship, ISHKAR helps to support local livelihoods and brings the region’s unique cultural heritage to a global audience.

Handcrafted in northern Afghanistan using 100% Ghazni wool and dyes derived from natural ingredients, each rug is created with traditional hand-knotting techniques passed down through generations.

Flowing lines, overlapping geometries and contrasting shapes

ZHA’s design process began with investigation and research of Afghanistan's natural and cultural identity, providing the starting point for a series of abstract design explorations inspired by the region’s natural forms and colours—with flowing lines, overlapping geometries and contrasting shapes defining depth and continuity.

These initial studies evolved into a dynamic, layered composition through ZHA's iterative digital design process that combined the precision of contemporary technologies together with the remarkable tactile qualities of Ghazni wool and the unique individuality of each artisans’ expertise and craftsmanship.
