As part of Strasbourg’s urban initiative to reduce car traffic in the city centre, a new tram line was introduced to encourage people to leave their cars outside the city in specially designed car parks and then take a tram to the town centre. ZHA was commissioned to design the northern terminus of Line B and a 700-space car park. To reconcile the traffic movement, the haphazardness of its suburban setting, and the dense historic fabric of Strasbourg, Zaha responded to the site with elegant but deceptive simplicity.
This project was awarded the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture, also known as the Mies van der Rohe Award, in 2003.
Presented in English, French, and German, this volume includes Hadid’s original sketches, along with contributions by Andreas Ruby and photographs by Hélène Binet and Roland Halbe.
