A detailed history and site study

The Port of Antwerp stories a rich history. In the 16th century, the port was already a hub of international trade—a role it continues to hold five centuries and many chapters later. Today, the port remains the heartbeat of the region, connecting Antwerp to the rest of the world.

Inspired by this unique context and legacy, ZHA designed the new Port House for Antwerp. The new Port House in Antwerp repurposes, renovates, and extends a derelict fire station into a new headquarters for the port—bringing together the port’s 500 staff that previously worked in separate buildings around the city.

This richly illustrated volume presents a detailed history and site study of the Port of Antwerp and the River Scheldt, with a special contribution by architect Richard Rogers. Readers are guided through the geometric evolution of the building’s design, with models, drawings, and construction photographs—including images of the original historical structure before intervention and full documentation of the construction stages—offering a complete visual journey of the Port House’s creation.
