Our Story

A rich history, a bright future

ZHA evolved from a one-room studio to a global practice, wholly owned by our 500 employees. Approaching the milestone of 50 years pioneering radical architectural solutions, we reflect proudly on our history and look ahead to creating the cities of tomorrow.

1979 – 2000: A Visionary Approach

ZHA was founded by architect Zaha Hadid in London in 1999, having already established herself as world-renowned in her profession since 1979. Our multidisciplinary approach embodies an enlightened philosophical framework. Creating open forms and civic spaces to democratise each building, ZHA’s work engages local cultures by an act of attraction rather than an imposition.

Our Principal, Patrik Schumacher, joined Zaha 1988. We completed our first built project in 1993.

Project

Vitra Fire Station

Conceived as the end-note to existing factory buildings, the Vitra Fire Station defines rather than occupies space – emerging as a linear, layered series of walls, between which programme elements are contained – a representation of ‘movement frozen’ – an ‘alert’ structure, ready to explode into action at any moment.

2000 – 2011: Pioneering Digital Technologies

Our portfolio of projects expanded globally, working in dozens of countries across four continents. Our London office grew to 300 employees, and we opened a Beijing studio. We established our first formal research group, ZHA’s Computation and Design Group (ZHA CODE), pioneering  new technologies for design and construction.

Recognised by renowned academic and professional institutions worldwide, our work set new benchmarks and opened new frontiers for the industry. Zaha became the first woman to receive the Pritzker Architecture Prize.

2011 – 2020: Expanding Typologies & Techniques

Establishing the studio as a global leader in the advancement of new technologies to enhance the performance and efficiencies within our architecture and enriching the spaces we create, we founded three further research teams and opened our Hong Kong studio. In 2016, Zaha was the first woman to be awarded the RIBA Gold Medal.

Zaha Hadid passed away on 31st March 2016. Her legacy endures in every aspect of our work.

2020 – Beyond: Building the Future, Together

Continuing to innovate at the forefront of our profession, ZHA has grown to become an employee-owned company. Led by those who built the practice with Zaha, we invest all of our profits back into our people and our company. Having completed almost 100 projects worldwide, we are currently developing 58 projects in 23 countries across six continents. Together, we are building the future.
